Upcoming Workshops

Listed are the upcoming DSDS workshops. Note that these workshops are open only to DSDS members / people with some swing dance experience. If you are not sure if you can participate, please contact us, and we will answer all of your questions.

Geoff and Rebecca Workshop

Geoff and Rebecca workshop is this coming weekend! Saturday and Sunday November 19th and 20th. Saturday workshop is open to all DSDS members. Sunday is open to only level 3 and 4, as it will require adequate skill in lindy hop and charleston. If you are in level 2 and feel that you have enough experience to attend the Sunday workshop, contact Mark (markpavlovski@gmail.com) and discuss it with him. The schedule both days is 10am to 5pm with a lunch break in the middle. Stay tuned for the locations!

The registration fee is only $25 for one day and $40 if you are attending both days for students/low income and $30/$50 for community members.

This workhop is a unique opportunity to significantly improve your dancing technique and lean fun new moves. We highly recomend you attend the workshop if you are able to. The prices for the workshop are unreasonably low: an equivalent workshop with instructors of this level would cost at least three times as much anywhere else. DSDS subsidises the workshop to make it more accessible for the students.

Please pre-register on PayPal to help us insure the proper attendance and guarantee the proper levels of attendance. If you are unable to register with PayPal you will be able to register at the door.

7:00-8:15: The Charleston is All the Rage

intended for all dancers, from beginners on up

What's not to like about the Charleston? Its jazzy steps make it easier to dance to faster music; it provides a fun change of pace from the Lindy hop basic; and it comes with its own great variations and style. Come boost your repertoire with this Prohibition-era dance from which the Lindy hop descended-a dance whose steps are still intermixed with swing dancing today. We will be covering the basics for those new to Charleston, but those already familiar with the dance will find some fresh variations to try on the social floor!

8:15-9:15: Social dancing

9:15-10:30: Swingin' Out is Where It's At

intended for beyond-the-basics dancers and up

The swingout is the signature Lindy hop move, with a lifetime's worth of potential and possibility. The athletic change of direction is an instant roller coaster ride every time, while the stretched-out time apart allows for individual flourishes that complement the partner dance. Dance like the original Lindy hoppers with these sample swingout variations - for both leads and follows! - that look and feel fun and fantastic.

Instructors: Greg Martin and Laura Barton

Greg Martin got hooked on Lindy hop the first time he went to a social dance, six years ago. After devouring all of the lessons Vancouver had to offer, he has been lucky enough to dance and attend workshops in three countries; he has learned from teachers from all over the world, including some of the first Lindy hoppers ever like Frankie Manning himself. He loves being able to listen to hoppin' music, connect socially with people on the dance floor, and count as high as 8 all at the same time.
